GUN Dreams and More
WELCOME TO THE NO BS WORLD OF TEDDY JACOBSON
I had a call today from a friend that started me thinking of all the things that could be, but most likely never will. I for one always want to make things happen and I do not beat around the bush because life is too short to start becoming a politician and I am not about to try and become popular to say what makes people feel good. I can not change this world, its in a mess and on self destruct but we can just think beyond our problems for a while and let me explain what I want to see in the world of Guns and Gunsmithing. The guns for sale today have been cheapened very badly because good ole Benjamin Franklin is more important to these companies and bean counters than the old world craftsmen that are now turning over in their graves.
I have been thinking about rifles and how some of the very best things could have been put on the market or were banned. I once owned an HK model 94 that I bought new and foolishly sold it a very long time ago for $600.00 that was a fair price in those days but can you imagine what it is worth now. These kinds of rifles were made very well and are still in great demand. I can't even remember all of the very good classic weapons I have owned, most are gone now as I must have traded so many things at gun shows in the early 80's. I have no written script for this commentary and I am just going to start with rifles and we will get into handguns.
I had always been very disappointed that the Ruger factory never offered their Mini 14 with a match grade barrel. I have owned a number of these rifles but never would keep them because I was never satisfied with their accuracy. You would have thought that the factory would have been smart enough to think about this major problem. If I remember right this rifle was originally engineered to come out in 308 winchester caliber. It never was to be, I am going strictly by memory as I do recall the anticipation of this rifle way back when rumors appeared. I do think that the Ruger factory made a very good move when they offered the 10/22 with a target barrel that is super accurate.
I always wanted a rifle that could be broken down into 2 sections that could easily be stored and or transported. This was never a priority of the factories that I can remember. I had a Marlin Papoose at one time and it was never accurate for me. Maybe the new ones are better. I still do not know why Marlin discontinued their Camp Carbine in 45 acp. We will never know the story behind all these factory decisions that were made. My father was always a Deer hunter and he had but 2 rifles he liked, one was a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington caliber and the other was a Winchester pre 64 model 70 in 30-06 that were both good rifles. As for me all I wanted to shoot was at paper targets. I fired both his rifles many times.
I am of the firm opinion that current rifles could be made far better if these companies utilized the best coatings on all the interior parts that are being used in other industries. The gunsmithing mind in general is 50 years behind the times, in this world of such advanced technology in both ideas and refinements and the frictionless systems that they could achieve is beyond comprehension, which I will explain. Some of these people are still using polishing media that was used 30 plus years ago and they are using adhesives that are long outdated, because it would be too labor intensive to educate the very people that are content to still buy and use these older products. That is what separates me from them. I want to find the very people out there in other fields that can teach me about abrasives or types of steel or electronics or whatever.
I have gone to great lengths to read about spring material. I have a number of industrial spring catalogs that I can call and speak with any number of actual spring engineers and verify what I have suspected all these years and I want to know about advanced spring technology that can give me a better gun and also benefit you. I always expected caseless ammunition to take over the military requirements where a soldier could carry three times the number of rounds when going into battle because it would be less weight as their is no brass case. This was being worked on for years by various manufacturers, What happened ?? I do not have logical answers. Its like crude oil, remember all the rumors in the 60's that the car companies bought up all the designs that could give some one 50 plus miles to the gallon but they put these newly purchased designs in the closet so no one could ever use them. THEY WERE MAKING TO MUCH MONEY SELLING OIL. They were not about to jepardize all that.
Lets talk about handguns. This is where there is no BS. For years I have been trying to get someone to make a set of ultra thin grips for the Beretta 92f that would not crack that would be ideal for some one with a smaller hand. No one wanted to even listen to me, wood could not work because it would crack, I even told them what material would work, would they listen ?? NO, Why, I do not know. This could have also been applied to many othe wide body handguns like the Sig Sauer 226 and the Browning Hi Power, etc.
I tried to get a digital readout made for magazines that would face the shooter so that he or she would always know how many rounds remained in the magazine. I could not find one person to take me serious. I designed a kill switch that worked with an infra red signal that if a policeman lost his firearm to an attacker as what happened yesterday in the courthouse in Georgia, the police person had a remote control pinned on his or her shirt that all they had to do was push a button and the police gun could never be fired. Would anyone listen to me ?? NO... I contacted manufacturers and in disgust I contacted CBS news and they told me they had no interest in my idea. No one cares until its too late then they BS everyone how concerned they are. ITS ALL BS.
I wanted to see an electronic chamber indicator on all 1911 pistols and I designed one on paper. I contacted Colt trying to get them interested in my idea but in 1992 they filed for some type of bankrupcy and their lawyers shot down the idea because of the reliance on a battery. How about pacemakers I asked them. But it was over dealing with them, it was a genuine waste of my time. There are always better ways if you study anything, but all most people think about is how much will I be able to make in profit.
I designed an electronic handgun in the late 80's on paper only. I showed all my drawings to my friend the late TOM FERGUSON of GunWorld fame and he signed each page and he said I was far to advanced for the people of that era, they would never understand that it was not always about the green dollar. I even used a solenoid for a electronic way of hitting a firing pin. I had really wanted a roller ball system in the frame to side fit so that all women could easily rack the slide. All my electronics had gold plated contacts and I even wanted a transmitter that could track the guns location when turned on. I had a magnetic magazine catch. I could go on and on and on but you get the idea, its what dreams are made of.
I am now going to tell you what I believe should be done to 1911 parts, this is now public and my era of doing this is now over but if some one else wants to do it go right ahead. There is no reason not to finally have a good ambi safety for the 1911 pistol. All the ones that are out there are a waste of time in my opinion. You must have a steel shaft or solid pin that goes through the frame. The ones that join in the middle as they are now producing will loosen up under recoil everytime. The ones where the left thumb side is that rides in an extended sear pin is not reliable because the pins do sometimes break. Another problem that causes the plunger tube to break away from the frame is that the thumb safety is not thick enough where it interfaces the detent pin that protrudes out of the plunger tube. The pin is riding half off the thumb safety, bad news folks...
WHY NOT have a thumb safety with interchangeable paddles, I have tried to talk people into this idea for years and they will not do it. BECAUSE they make more money selling individual thumb safety designs.
How about a grip safety that has different height raised sections so that each individual shooter has the option of installing the one that best suits them. You could even have removeable upper sections so that a straight spur hammer could be used if they wanted, but its easier to sell each model as more Mr. Franklins are available. Its always been about the green bank where WILLIE (the actor) SUTTON hangs out.
How about the slide stop, the very same idea applies using removable levers of different kinds and lengths and sweeps. Good Idea ?? For me and you maybe but not for the money people. How about hammers with bronze sleeve bearings, it can be done and it will work better as it will rotate like glass.
How about main spring housings with exotic wood inlay that would match your grips, good idea to me but not to the establishment... I guess I always wanted to much and expected other people to feel like me but I was wrong. I have just scratched the surface of my ideas. I want a barrel bushing with ball bearings all around. I also want a roller in the guide rod head of the guide rod.
I have not even touched on the other semi auto pistols and then there are revolvers that I have thought about for years. I want an led to light up facing the shooter on the back of the recoil shield of a revolver telling him or her that a cartridge is in the chamber ready to be fired. And the list goes on and on, this is what dreams are made of and some of it may some day happen but not likely.
Trying to reason with a gun publication is out of the question when you are not politically correct like me. They are not about to jepardize the best job they ever had in their life. Trying to reason with a manufacturer that is making tons of money and the owner gets transported to work in a limousine is a waste of time. Trying to ask anyone that is content going to the bank every friday with a bag full of deposits is a waste of time. My era is coming to an end, but I forgot more than these wannabbees ever knew. They know who I am talking about. I never made a lot of money in gunsmithing but I paid bills and we stayed alive. I can still look in the mirror and know that my honor and integrity is still intact and G-D will judge me not the frauds in the gun business.
