Ruger "P" Series
WELCOME TO THE NO BS ZONE.
I have worked on quite a few of the Ruger P series semi auto pistols thru the years. They make many models and I have trouble remembering all the model numbers without their catalog in front of me. My experience all started with the Ruger P 85. Ruger makes the best castings in the business, and there is no telling how many castings they make for other companies, this is never talked about.
Many of the current Ruger P series of pistols have a synthetic frame that is a high strength polymer which contains fiberglass.
I have spent countless hours figuring out how to refine these actions and its not easy. I have always found the pistol to be reasonably priced and it has proven reliable in operation. The double action is easier to correct than the single action. Most all of the internals are castings and they use a stamped part where necessary. I do not recall ever seeing any quality machined parts anywhere in this pistol. I have never considered the P series the kind of pistol that I would want to own but I do have faith in its ability to be totally reliable.
I remember working on many P 85 pistols when they first came out and trying to get the single action to break clean as glass was a real problem. I did figure it out, the engagements are rough castings like everything else. The problem that continually bothers me about owning a Ruger is that if you need a part that the Ruger factory says is of a critical nature, they will not sell that part to you or me. You must return your Ruger to the factory and let them install the some times very in expensive critical part. The problem with this scenario is that UPS and FED EX want handguns shipped over nite and this is not cheap. Prices for shipping go by weight and by the amount of insurance and it depends on where its coming from and where its going. I have no doubt we can thank a previous administration for this situation.
There is no doubt in my mind that guns that are designed by most companies are the end result of the marketing people, whose main focus is future sales. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE MONEY TRAIL. I do not like the design of how the trigger is captivated in the frame or the trigger bar or the trigger bar spring. Of course no one would ever ask me, I am not politically correct. The Ruger P series are made with economy in mind, this is my opinion only. Of all the P series pistols I have worked on I can not say one bad word about being able to make them work flawlessly. WOULD I BUY ONE ?? NO, WHY ?? There are better choices but they cost far more money that some one like me is willing to spend.
So in perspective if you had a limited budget, this may be an ideal pistol for you.
I once worked on one of these pistols for a woman that used it for competition, and it was flawless in operation and she was very happy with it. I would have no reservations of having to use her old P series pistol for most any situation, but as in previous commentaries I have already stated my perferred handguns of choice. I look at these handguns totally different than most people because I know what is on the inside of all these pistols and I understand the design and the quality of the parts being used. I can decide on that basis whether or not that manufacturer makes anything that I would want to own.
To sum it all up, the Ruger P series are reliable and affordable, but only you can decide if you like the way it feels in your hand. It is one of the easier semi auto pistols for a woman to be able to pull the slide back with out a helper. I suggest you do not fully strip the internal action or you will wind up sending it back to Ruger, most likely in pieces.
Please note, I can not choose a handgun for anyone. I can only present different options for you and point out my observations of what I believe and what I see internally. The final decision must be yours, but in these commentaries there is NO ENTERTAINMENT, NO BS, THIS IS WHY I HAVE SEEN AND MADE MY DETERMINATIONS THRU WORKING ON ALL THESE DIFFERENT HANDGUNS.
AUTHORS PERSONAL NOTATION: This commentary as well as all my previous commentaries are my personal opinion only and my personal viewpoint only. If you do not like it here go and start your own Blogger page so we can all see how much you know, many people keep complaining about me on the low grade forums, well go back there and enjoy the BS.
