Things To Know....
WELCOME TO THE NO BS ZONE.
I thought this would be a good topic after having a conversation today with a local Texas Police Officer. There is so much BS out there I feel obligated to tell you about a few things I realize and take for granted but most of you should know.
1. Never use a middle of the back holster (MOB) as you could wind up in a wheel chair. If you ever fell on your back on concrete with you gun in place, your walking days are over.
2. Most Police I would hope should never carry their handcuffs in the middle of their back.
3. If you have a Walther handgun or a Sig Sauer 230, 232 and some other polymers never use a cleaner that contains Methylene Chloride as it will eat the plastic instantly.
4. Never make the grip screw to tight if you own a Walther PP, PPK, PPK/S, TPH because you will crack the grips around the brass nut.
5. If you buy after market grips for your PPK or PPK/S you are usually looking for trouble. Most will cause your double action to bind up. I have seen this time and time again. It could cost you your life.
6. If you wear a gold ring when shooting a pistol with fine cut checkering on your front strap you will crush the diamond points of the checkering.
7. Having a properly adjusted internal extractor in your 1911 pistol means nothing if it has not been made out of good steel and HEAT TREATED PROPERLY.
8. When carrying a handgun in a holster with belt slots, you must wear the same side belt to match the holster slots or you will have real problems as the holster will cant front to rear.
9. I personally would never carry any ammunition unless my primers are sealed. I never rely on the factory seal, I take no chances with my carry ammo.
10. You must clean your external extractor periodically as in a Beretta 92F etc. I still find the external extractor more reliable than the internal extractor that has been installed by an experienced person. Just look at a Browning Hi Power and ask your self why did they change from an internal extractor to the current external extractor.
11. If you buy a very used HK P7 and even if you got it cheap, if it has been fired a great deal, if the gas hole in front of the flutted chamber is eroding, be prepared to pay the factory to install a new barrel.
12. A Taurus revolver is not an exact copy of a S&W revolver. A Rossi revolver is closer to being a copy to the S&W design.
13. Fiber optic rod type sights are too fragile on a street gun. The cleaning agent Methylene Chloride will ruin them.
14. You do not need to lower the ejection port and put a roll over notch on the slide of a 1911 pistol to make it work flawlessly.
15. I always have my holsters made with a forward cant, so no one can easily remove my hand gun from behind me while its holstered.
16. When a 1911 pistol continues to jam and everything is set up properly using good ammo and good magazines, one of the most critical overlooked items is the magazine catch assembly.
17. If you want to paint sights with bright colors, you must first put a base of white paint down first. If you ever wondered how professional sights have a paint that is impervious to everything, email me and I will tell you.
18. REVOLVERS (looking from the rear)
Colt cylinder rotates clockwise
S&W cylinder rotates counter clockwise
Ruger cylinder rotates counter clockwise
Taurus cylinder rotates counter clockwise
19. I have found that 7 and 8 shot revolvers lose their timing on some chambers much quicker than a 6 shot revolver.
20. For those that own 1911 pistols be sure the top of your thumb safety while in the down position is no less than 1/16 of an inch lower than the bottom of the slide. Most factories and people do not know how to set this properly.
