HANDGUNS - FACT VS. BS
I continue to get emails and phone calls about handguns past and present and modifications of what can and cannot be done. My friend Robert in Florida wants to know if its necessary to flare the ejection port and lower it as many people claim. Answer is "NO" Now this will really piss off the gunsmithing world as it takes a chunk of money out of their pocket. G.I. Colt 45 semi autos used to run 100% without lowering the ejection port. If they take too much metal off in their quest to lower the port you will have problems. My honesty here is what really makes me so un popular with the smithing world. To prove my point, LOOK AT AN HK P7 AND YOU WILL SEE A VERY SMALL EJECTION PORT AND YOU HARDLY EVER HEAR OF ONE EVER JAMMING, THAT TELLS YOU SOMETHING. NO ONE EVER SUGGESTS LOWERING AND FLARING THAT PORT, WHY ?? BECAUSE THE MONEY IS IN WORKING ON 1911 PISTOLS.
Another question I get all the time is can you just change the springs in a factory handgun for an instant trigger job ??Answer is "NO" The reason is that unless you remove the friction out of the action you will not get reliability in weaker springs. When you change the springs in a J frame SW such as a Model 60 you must also change the angles because other wise your single action will be 1.5 lbs. Its not as easy as many people would have you believe. All springs take a set. Some types of spring wire take a bigger set than others and so you are looking for major misfires if you just put in weaker springs and do not refine the action, most people do not know how.
Another major problem that most of you are not aware of is that if you send your gun to a well known smith you have no way of knowing who will work on that gun. Many people sub out the work. I have been approached through past years by many smiths that had little work and asked me if I would sub out some of my work to them. MY ANSWER TO THEM WAS ALWAYS NO, THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN WITH ME. I have too much integrity to ever deceive anyone. If I could not do it I would never take the job.
I have had many questions about installing older parts in the new SW revolver handguns. I do not see how that is possible because you are now dealing with a frame mounted firing pin and a safety lock. The new SW revolvers are nothing compared to the internal quality of the older ones. NEXT you will ask me what years to look for and the answer is I do not know as SW has been owned by so many companies through the years its hard for me to answer that question. The new President and CEO of SW is from 2 other industries and has only been in the gun business a short time according to an article I read. How could he possibly compare a product in that capacity of previous experience. My suggestion is that if you have an older SW from the 60's or 70's do not sell it.
A Sig Sauer pistol uses a hammer reset spring design that requies a specific amount of spring power (mainspring) to operate reliably. If you just install weaker springs you are looking for major reliabilty issues that could cost you your life. Unless your action is refined by a pro that really understands the Sig design do not do it because your life depends on it. Every different Sig model must be treated differently when refining it, for example I do things different when working on a Sig 220 as compared to a Sig 239, etc, etc. I only own one Sig pistol and being left handed its not my handgun of choice even though it is well made and can be super reliable.

The current production handguns of today with the exception of a select few are nothing of the quality of handguns that were made years ago. The key to current sales are marketing geniuses that know how to reach your hot button. If they spend that kind of money on advertising that means they must pass the cost on to you the consumer. When a company has an ad on the back cover or inside the front cover of a magazine using a minimum of 4 colors, the cost is tremendous. Depending on which and or all the magazines a medium size handgun company can drop $10,000. a month just on advertising with ease.
They are all determined to bring out new calibers that you do not need but these well known people and their advertisements find a way to convince you that you must have this product and new caliber. In a street fight, DEAD IS DEAD, TOE TAGS ARE ALL THE SAME. Look at the BS of owning a 1911 style pistol with a 3 inch barrel, remember that one inch is the chamber so that you really have a barrel with 2 inches of rifling. Depending on the weight of your bullet and the burn rate of your powder you could be shooting everyones favorite 230 grain hardball which will give you a muzzle velocity of 650 - 700 feet per second if you are lucky. Now if you listen to these morons and have a ported barrel you have a flame thrower that can burn your face off or your eyes out.
MAKE SENSE ?? NOT TO ME.
You do not need a ported handgun for defensive carry...... period. Its all hype and BS designed to get you to part with Mr. Franklin that is hiding in your pocket or wallet or in some cases you may have to ask your wifes permission, ain't that a crock of BS. When people called me thru the years and told me that they had to discuss the upgrade of a handgun with their spouse, I just laughed to myself and wrote them off immediately. I have now mellowed compared to years ago, now I just politely tell them to call some one else.
There is no money in the type of gunsmithing I do as its too labor intensive and I have always known that. These people that thru the years have bargained with me always made more money than I ever did, now at this point in time I just walk away and say "NO"......its that simple. You can not bring back the past of anything especially the quality in most (not all) handguns. The best buy in a 1911 pistol is still the Springfield Armory basic G.I. mil-spec model for $400.00
For those that want to buy a factory high dollar 1911 pistol by all means go for it as its nothing but a high dollar production handgun. My good friend Mr. Camp is still shooting his SA mil-spec and has total faith in it. You can go to www.hipowersandhandguns.com and read his wonderful articles about guns and ammunition, he is one of the finest writers in this country today.
When you buy a high dollar production 1911 pistol that may have 20 or 30 people working in a small shop, everyones job is different. One person may fit the frame to slide and the next person may just fit the barrel and bushing. Another may work on the hammer and sear and right on down the line to its completion. What you thought was a custom high dollar pistol is nothing more than a high dollar production 1911 worked on by many people of unknown ability. Its your call and your money and I do not care. I write these commentaries to pass on my experience and help people but all final decisions are always yours and YOUR WIFES TO MAKE.
HAVE A GOOD DAY.
INVASION USA
Could French-style riots happen here?
Yes, says a hopeful leader of 'Aztlan' separatist movement

While Many Americans are watching the chaos unfold
following 12 nights of mayhem by largely Muslim immigrants
in the streets of France, a leader of the separatist Aztlan
movement in the U.S. says it's only a matter of time before
worse unrest hits the streets of America."Can a similar insurrection occur in the USA?" asks
Ernesto Cienfuegos of La Voz de Aztlan.Yes, he concludes.
"Today, here in Los Angeles, we are already seeing
ominous signs of an impending social explosion that
will make the French rebellion by Muslim and immigrant
youths seem 'tame' by comparison," he writes.
"All the ingredients are present including a hostile
and racist police as in France. In fact, we came close
to having major riots on three separate occasions just
this year alone."
Aztlan activists, who see themselves as "America's
Palestinians," want to carve out of most of the
southwestern United States an independent,
Spanish-speaking nation known as the Republica
del Norte.
According to earlier reports in La Voz de Aztlan, the leaders
of this movement are meeting continuously with extremists
from the Islamic world.
"There are great similarities between the political and
economic condition of the Palestinians in occupied Palestine
and that of La Raza in the southwest United States,
" explained one 2001 editorial in La Voz de Aztlan.
Los Angeles is perceived as the future capital of Aztlan
or Republica de Norte.Cienfuegos continued in today's dispatch:
"On top of all this, there are major rumblings in the
high schools of the Los Angeles Unified School District,
the second largest in the USA. A few days ago, thousands
of students, predominantly of Mexican descent, simply
walked out of their schools to protest overcrowding, lack
of texts, lack of desks and unqualified teachers.
There is a strange feeling here in Los Angeles that
something sinister is about to happen, but no one knows
when. All it will take is for a 'bird-brain cop' to do something
stupid and all hell will break loose. If another major
rebellion breaks out here in L.A. it could rapidly spread
throughout the USA as it has spread in France.""The social and economic conditions that exist in France
that adversely affect its immigrant and Muslim populations
also exist here in the USA," Cienfuegos writes. "These
conditions negatively affect our black, Latino and immigrant
populations in the same way.
The rebellion that is occurring in France can and will
most probably happen here.
If it does, it will have grave consequences on the social,
political and economic structures of the country and it
could possibly topple a government already weakened
by the Iraq War and corruption within its ranks."
