Refining your street gun

WELCOME TO THE NO BS ZONE OF TEDDY JACOBSON

MUST READ NOW:

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907. "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
Theodore Roosevelt 1907

I have written many artictles and commentaries on this very subject for at least 20 years. Its now time to touch on this subject once again because of all the butchered handguns I have seen and the un necessary work that has been done to many of them. When I grew up in Brooklyn in the 1950's many people used to put mud flaps on their cars and a fox tail on their car radio antenna, BUT THE BASIC CAR NEVER RAN ANY BETTER. I used to see women dressed to kill with their mink coats and jewelry but in the end was it a better evening going out with one of these delightful looking women, answer is NO, Just more expensive. This whole scenario reminds me of "Clara Bow" who was the "IT" girl, only those that are my age will know what I am talking about. If "Clark Bagel" was alive we could ask him.

At this point in time after seeing so much abuse done to handguns for the sake of money I really have had it. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU NEVER BUY ANY GUN SIGHT UNSEEN FROM ANYONE. Do not believe the BS that a 30 year old handgun you have never seen is new in the box at a premium price unless you have seen it and or have some one like me look it over that is honest and trust worthy. I despise these frauds that sell things they really know are junk, and they know they can and do take the unsuspecting person every day. Of course there are honest people selling old mint condition guns but they are very hard to find.

My life depends on my street gun, its that simple. Your life depends on your carry street gun. You can not expect to let some one that you do not know work on the very handgun that you will use to protect life and property. There are very few people that you can trust in this world. Here is where I make some more friends. A man that is a machinist and may be very good at running machinery may or may not be capable of doing a trigger job on your favorite handgun. BESIDES if its a large shop he or she has employees and you have no clue who will be the one cutting your springs and or using their favorite two dollar stone on the internals of your survival handgun.

You must get real its most always about Mr. Benjamin Franklin that resides in Anytown, USA.... The authorities once asked the famous bank robber Willie (the Actor) Sutton why he always robs banks and his answer was because that is where all the money is. There is a very long story that involves Willie Sutton and Arnold Shuster and the New York Mafia if you are interested email me.

There is nothing wrong with refining a handgun for street carry, but there are limitations to what you need and what should be done. Rubber grips are good for absorbing recoil but your clothing will cling to it and in the case of concealed carry I avoid them. MOST PEOPLE WANT A LIGHT TRIGGER PULL, ITS MORE IMPORTANT THAT THE PULL IS SMOOTH BUT THE ENGAGEMENTS MUST BREAK CLEAN. I would never give anyone a super light trigger pull but I want my trigger to break like glass.

In my younger days I turned down a great deal of work because I refused to give people a 1.5 or 2.0 or 2.5 lb. trigger pull.... It all depends on each model as to what can be done safely and I could never expext the very finest machinist to understand what I am about to say. My expertise has always been internal action work. The only machinery I am very familiar with is my foot pedal. I have always done everything by hand, I am from a world that does not exist anymore.

I am going to give you some examples. On an HK P7 I can safely make the single action 3.5 lbs. On a Browning Hi Power I can safely make the single action 4.75 lbs. On a 1911 My 4.5 lbs breaks so clean you would swear it was three lbs. STAY with me as I am going down a road you will understand in a minute or two. A great deal of what I do is determined by the geometry of the hammer and sear and trigger bar etc. For example I can make the Kahr work safely at 6 lbs where I need 13 lbs for the double action of a Walther PPK or PPK/S... SIG Pistols can be very deceiving because they use a hammer reset spring design that most smiths do not understand the designs limitations.

On a third generation SW semi auto I can get reliable ignition on the double action with 9 lbs but on the single action I must go with 5 lbs. I do not pick these numbers out of my hat, these are determined through years of trial and error. These poundages are nothing that I guess at, I have learned what it takes to make each particular model reliable. How can the average general Machinist/Smith understand all this. YES OF COURSE HE MAY BE KNOWLEDGABLE ON ONE OR TWO MODELS BUT THATS A DROP IN THE BUCKET.

Lets talk about the HK USP. Lets say you want to change your recoil spring that is captivated by a lock ring. Did you or your favorite Smith know that the factory has a special jig that is used to break the existing lock ring and after the recoil spring is changed a new lock ring must be installed using this factory jig. Lets say you want to do a trigger job on your USP, lets say you have a compact model, your trigger return is very, very slow because there is a problem that must be corrected. After the work is properly done on a USP your double action will be 9.5 lbs and your single action will be 4.0 lbs and no coils will be cut off any spring.

The trigger work done to a Colt Mustang is very different than what must be done to a Colt Pony or Colt Pocket Nine. Same example as I could not treat your NAA Guardian the same as your Seecamp or your Micro Kahr. This is very difficult to explain and much more difficult to do. What I am trying to get you to realize is that just letting anyone give your survival handgun a trigger job can become your worst nitemare. (click instead of bang) Most every handgun can be improved but there are limitations what you can expect which result from the design and geometry and how skilled the person is that you are going to allow to do this work.

I am trying to instill caution in you that many of you do not understand. I want nothing as I have no agenda but truth and honesty. I am suggesting that you use caution in what you have done, its that simple. Many current production guns made today are very poor as compared to years past. Even the after market parts are made differently, most everything is made with the thought of getting to know Benjamin Franklin much better, it seems everyone admires his picture so much, the more pictures they carry of him in their pocket the happier they are.

Do not play around with your life, when things go sour, it happens very quickly and there is little time to think. You must be trained to react and always remember its Bullet Placement, Bullet Placement, because the perp is not concerned that you are a legend and are carrying your favorite 50 year old 45 acp ball ammo that these people have tried to convince you that is the caliber of choice, ITS ALL BS, ITS BULLET PLACEMENT. Ask the guy in the morgue if he knew he died from the hit of a 22 LR, 38 special or 9mm or 45acp or 44 magnum, etc, etc, etc. Look for the guy laying on the table with the good looking toe tag.

Now I want to touch on all the SW revolvers I have seen that had 4 coils cut off the rebound slide spring and if it was a "J" frame coils were cut off the main spring and if it was a K, L, or N frame the flat main spring was either bent or ground super thin by the "EXPOIT" SMITH. This is and was your life he had no regard for. Doing something like this just makes me sick as I know what will happen when you need the revolver for protection of your life and the lives of your family. IT MAY NOT WORK. Do you want to play these odds ??? I leave it up to you. I do not gamble. I could never live with myself with this situation.

When World War III begins, it will inevitably be ignited by developments in two specific regions – the Middle East and Asia. The Middle East is already the focal point of a titanic conflict between the West and Islamism. And the rise of China as a major world power causes Beijing to scramble for natural resources, including oil, found principally in the Middle East.

China has already become the second-largest oil consumer in the world, after the U.S. It has developed a sophisticated military capability and it is rushing in to fill voids left by the U.S. in the wake of the West’s conflict with Islamism. China has a long history of involvement in the Middle East. Throughout the Cold War, China stepped in to court Arab and Muslim nations when tensions with the West were running high.

But whereas once China’s involvement in the region was based more on politics and a natural antithesis with the West, today its interest in the Middle East is based on pure economics. It needs oil for continued growth. China became a net oil importer 13 years ago. And its search for more reserves has never ceased. The Middle East now provides China with half its oil imports. Recently, China has hosted leaders from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia – securing energy exploration agreements and contracts to develop its own refining capacities.

For more than a decade, Saudi Arabia’s exports to the U.S. have been declining, while its exports to China have been increasing. China’s relations with Pakistan, a close ally of Saudi Arabia, remain strong. And China has moved ever closer to Iran, even supporting its quest for nuclear power and nuclear arms. China’s history with Iran dates back much further than the Cold War. There were major trade routes between China and Iran for centuries.

But more recently, China signed a $100 billion deal with Iran to import 10 million tons of liquefied natural gas over a 25-year period in exchange for a Chinese stake of 50 percent in the development of the Yahavaran oil field in Iran. China is also exploring the feasibility of a direct pipeline to Iran via Kazakhstan. There is no doubt that Iran’s nuclear program is a potential source of an imminent showdown with the West. Therefore, China’s support for Iran becomes critical – the kind of support that can turn a regional conflict into a global one.

Next trouble spot: Transnistria
Huge arms depot in strategic Eastern European region

Transnistria, or Transdnestr -- an “autonomous region” on the left banks of the river Dnepr inside Moldova, a “breakaway republic” or a “sovereign territory with a right to self-determination”? It all depends on who is talking and what they are trying to achieve but, one thing is certain – tensions have risen considerably since March 3.

Located in Eastern Europe, on a thin strip of land between Ukraine to the north and Moldova to the south, Transnistria has enjoyed de facto independence since 1991, when it separated itself from Moldavia, itself a former Soviet Republic. This was made possible by a 4,000+ strong contingent of the 14th Soviet Army and armed Russian, Ukrainian and Cossack volunteers, and the fact that the region was, and continues to be, home to a 20,000 ton weapons and ammunitions depot, possibly the largest in Europe.

More than 2,000 Russian troops continue to be stationed there to this day. Romanian-speaking Moldovans now form about 32 percent of the 550,000-strong population, and prefer that the region come back to the Moldovan fold. The majority of the population is Slavic – Russian, Ukrainian or Bulgarian, and mostly look to Moscow for support.

The advent of the pro-Western government of Victor Yuschenko in Ukraine has put the region into a pincer between two pro-Western states, and the pressure is rising. On March 3, the Ukrainian government has stopped the transit of consumer goods across the Ukrainian-Transnistrian border, requiring that they be registered with Moldovan, rather than Transnistrian, customs.

In response, Transnistria has stopped the flow of Moldovan goods heading into Transnistria itself, or continuing on to Ukraine. Russia has protested this move and, as its ambassador-at-large, Valery Kenyaikin, stated after his visit to Transnistria March 8,

“Russia will grant economic aid to Transdnestr in case of necessity,”

going on to accuse the Ukrainian authorities of “trying to force the capitulation of Transdnestr by economic means.” Similarly, on March 5, Transnistria’s prime minister, Igor Smirnov, stated that “actions of the Ukrainian authorities represent a slow, gradual economic death” for the territory, adding that he believed that “Ukraine’s actions are a result of Western pressure” with the aim of “creating chaos, regime change and the liquidation of the Transdnestr state.”

Confirming the seriousness of the situation, leader of Transnistria’s Armenian community, Nikolai Sarkisyants, has called it “even more serious, then during military actions in 1992,” when armed conflict was at its height, resulting in the deaths of more than 700 people. Transnistria was one of the zones of possible conflict mentioned in Russian president Putin’s widely-quoted annual press conference of January 31 of this year, in which he said that independence for Serbia’s Kosovo province could also mean the future recognition of other disputed territories around the Russian perimeter and elsewhere.

And, with the Kosovo negotiations now at center stage of the ongoing East-West Grand Game, Transnistria seems to have been activated by both sides as a side-piece. Indeed, in late February, a youth movement organized demonstrations in front of the OSCE quarters in the Transnistrian capital of Tiraspol, shouting: “If you recognize Kosovo – recognize TMR [one of the abbreviations for Transnistria]!” And the leader of the demonstrations, Alena Arshinova, started the speech with the following words:

"Yesterday, on February 20, talks on Kosovo independence started in Vienna. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned, that settlement of Kosovo conflict should have universal validity for all unrecognized states…” While the demonstrators’ pro-Russian sentiments were apparent, the significance lay in the fact that the Kosovo parallel is now being actively used in other theaters, such as Georgia/Abkhazia/South Ossetia, Azerbaijan/Nagorno-Karabakh, Ukraine/Crimea, etc.

A recent report commissioned by the British Department for International Development referred to Transnistria as "a smuggling company masquerading as a state." On the other hand, Transnistria has been considered strategic by Moscow since Soviet times, and one of the reasons for the huge arms depot currently stationed there is its possible use in the Southeastern European theatre in the event of World War III, with enough supplies to arm up to four rifle divisions. -- G2B contributor Aleksandar Pavic
