Gunsmithing/Parts Manufacturing

Virgil Tripp started building custom 1911 pistols in about 1980. Skillful shooters used these pistols to win and place highly in local, national and world competitions. In 1987 Virgil designed and manufactured the industry’s first 1911 EDM hammers and sears. Now, gunsmiths could build great predictable trigger jobs without the grief of starting with substandard parts.

The carbon/fiber titanium trigger that is still sold today was Virgil’s next design. More parts were considered and things began to escalate. There became more design and manufacturing and less gun building. The company name was Tripp Research. In those years, Chip McCormick marketed a lot of these parts under his name, while today he offers his own line of parts. The modular frame was on the horizon.

Modular Frame
Around 1991, shooters began to move to red dot optics in IPSC. There was also a desire for more round capacity. Para Ordnance brought out their cast steel frame 13 round .45. Our company name was still Tripp Research and work began on what is now the STI 2011 modular frame. Sandy Strayer, fresh to the firearm community, joined the company.

Virgil was the gun guy, while Sandy was the CAD jockey. The modular frame was created. Virgil and Shari changed the company name to STI and provided Sandy with an equity position to recognize his contributions.

STI International
The frame project evolved into complete STI pistols and a gun company was born. Cameron Hopkins of American Handgunner brought early exposure of this pistol to the shooting public. Thank you, Cameron. In June of 1994 the company fragmented internally.

Sandy left STI and formed SVI, which he operates today. In September of 1994 the Brady law imposed artificial capacity restrictions. Dave and Shirley Skinner stepped up in November of 1994 and began their involvement with the Tripps and STI. The Skinners completed their purchase of the company very early in 1997 and began their series of improvements.

Ed Minshew and other key people stayed on to combine with other strong contributors. Dave and Pauletta Skinner now lead
STI to the dominant position in its market.

CobraChrome
After STI, Shari and Virgil moved back to the high desert “Old West” area of Texas, which they love. Virgil chose to hard chrome plate and polymer coat pistols because getting a good finish was always a problem for shooters and gun builders. It’s a non-forgiving business that rewards good processes and good people.

Everyone involved in this business for the past five years is proud of our track record. The company name was again Tripp Research. Over the years, Virgil handled thousands of pistols from mild to wild. Our hard chrome plating reputation is second to none. Consider us for your next pistol plating project. CobraMag, Upgrade Kits (other brands)
For a sheet metal tube with four other parts, 1911 magazines are a real technical challenge. We have excellent solutions. More detailed information is available at
1911 Magazines and Upgrade Kits.

Custom Pistolsmithing
We do it all on 1911 style pistols. We do many things on other types of pistols. Our expertise level is high. More detailed information is available at
Custom Pistolsmithing.

MAGAZINE TUBE - Heat treated stainless steel design has greater internal volume than any other 1911 mag of same capacity and overall length. This means the spring is compressed less when fully loaded for increased spring life and easier mag seating.

John Moses Browning originally designed the Government model 1911 pistol around a magazine holding 7 rounds of .45 ACP. The bottom of the tube fits flush with the bottom of the frame. These original mags were 7 round capacity and that was the end of the discussion. Later, Charles Kelsey came along under his DEVEL brand and invented a skirtless collapsible follower to facilitate getting an 8th round into a 7 round tube.

The IPSC rules in the 1980’s required a “standard” length tube, so his design was a clever method to get 8 rounds in a 7 round tube and still be competition legal. Today, that IPSC rule is history but the 7 round tube length lingers on and remains the basis for most 8 round mags.
The 8 round .45 ACP CobraMag for 1911 Government model pistols is designed without compromise for a true 8 round capacity. Our overall length from top of feed lips to bottom of the base pad is about equal as Wilson, McCormick, etc. so we all stick out from the grip about the same.

However, the CobraMag has way more useable tube length in the same overall assembled length. The 8 round CobraMag uses this additional tube length and volume (high volume HV) to accept more coils of spring, a follower with longer skirts, 8 rounds and enough room to easily seat fully loaded on a closed slide. This is accomplished by a clever base pad design (patents pending) that clads a longer functional tube rather than simply adding non-functional length to a shorter tube as done by our competitors with their base pads.

Whether to load seven or eight rounds into an eight round .45 mag has always been a hot discussion topic. People hold various opinions based on their experiences and theory of mag operation. I too have a position on this topic; however, “Your mileage may vary”.

First, let me say there are some decent 1911 .45 ACP mags out there. Most of them are 7 round capacity in my experience. If 7 round capacity is for you, the best move is to use our 7 round Super Seven upgrade kit in your existing other brand 7 or 8 round mags. Our kits will make them better. But the world does not stand still. Our 8 rounder has evolved to be quite good. If 8 round capacity is for you, the 8 round CobraMag is designed specifically for 8 round capacity.

JMB designed a 7 round mag with a skirted steel follower and a flush welded floor plate. In early IPSC days, Charles Kelsey (deceased) designed and patented a clever collapsible skirtless steel follower which allowed 8 rounds in a flush welded floor plate mag. This extra round was a big deal for competition purposes. Chip McCormick eventually acquired this design and uses it today in his line of mags.

Today, The McCormick and Wilson 8 round mags that I have looked at are what I call “mild” tube length derivatives of the original flush design. These sheet metal tubes are longer than an original flush tube but not by much. By using either skirtless or mini skirted followers and attention to a minimum number of spring coils, these mags will hold 8 rounds and still seat or click in fully loaded on a closed slide. Their base pads add overall length to the mag but do not add additional internal working volume for the tube.

My personal bias is that these are essentially 7 round tubes massaged to hold 8 rounds. Based on my experiences, I loaded 7 rounds when I have used these designs because sometimes the top round misbehaved when loaded to 8 rounds. Other times, a full 8 rounds behaved fine. I think this is a situation where the shooter decides for himself and his particular pistol (s) by range testing.

The only true 8 round .45 mag, in my technical opinion, is the CobraMag A8-MG. It has enough tube volume for a fully skirted follower and 13 coils of .049 diameter spring. The stick out past the frame is about the same as a Wilson or McCormick.

This product is designed by Virgil Tripp to address longstanding functionality issues in the 1911 feeding and slide lock back systems.

1. FEED LIPS - Top round is held higher to avoid nose down feed ramp jams and nose up three point jams, especially in fully loaded mags. Design also holds top round firmly in place to withstand rough handling outside the pistol.

2. TUBE - Heat treated stainless steel design has greater internal volume than any other 1911 mag of same capacity and overall length. This means the spring is compressed less when fully loaded for increased spring life and easier mag seating.

3. FOLLOWER - Innovative steel/polymer hybrid design has long skirts to prevent undesirable follower rotation. The durable steel slide stop lock back ledge is available in optional heights to advance or delay slide lock back. Clearance channels are molded into polymer body to give dirt and grit somewhere to go.

4. SPRING - Heat treated chrome silicon design has more coils per capacity than any other 1911 mag. Combined with a low helix angle, this means increased life and more consistent uplift. If there was a better spring, it would be in here.

5. BASE PAD - New design avoids inwardly turned retention tabs on the tube which hinder easy cleaning. Remember: nothing good happens with a dirty mag. This design cleans easily.

TheCobraMag base pad retention design (patents pending) allows the tube bottom to be void of clumsy retention lips for easier and better disassembly, assembly and cleaning. We have a user-friendly method to number or identify magazines. There are molded in depressions on the bottom of the pad that can be dotted in with paint to indicate numbers.

6. TECH SUPPORT - 1911 gunsmithing and function issues are freely discussed. We are also happy to discuss any specific performance issues for your particular pistol.

It adds life to your pistol and increases its value.

Cobra Chrome TM is the trade name for our specialized type of hard chrome applied by proprietary processes. Nothing is harder, more durable or better looking. It is the standard by which other plating finishes are compared.

The benefits from Cobra Chrome TM include outstanding appearance and corrosion resistance. Working fits are maintained for longer accuracy and reliability. It adds life to your pistol and increases its value.

There are differences in hard chrome chemistry. Tripp Research, Inc. worked closely with a major chemical manufacturer until we arrived at what we consider to be the best formulation for firearm components applications. The preparation of components prior to plating is critical to the outcome. Before we opened our doors for business, we designed and constructed a state of the art plating facility for the sole purpose of plating firearm components. All of our procedures are designed to eliminate variation in component processing.

We have a well-equipped machine shop including mill, lathe, TIG welder, and CAD design station. These tools are used for the purpose of in-house design and fabrication of our highly specialized racks and fixtures. Yes, it takes all this to support a first class firearms plating facility.

Firearm hard chrome plating is a three part puzzle. First, you'd better really know how to hard chrome the complex geometry of these firearm components. Secondly, you'd better really know the firearm and how to handle every component with respect. Thirdly, the turn around time must be short. Shooters want their pistol back quickly. It took a lot of process design and training for us to respond quickly to the requirements of shooters.

Cobra Chrome TM is a premiere surface treatment to give you pride in your pistol's function, longevity and appearance.

Tough Choices for Israel

Edward I. KochWednesday, Feb. 1, 2006

At Camp David in July 2002, Yasir Arafat rejected then Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's offer of Palestinian statehood in more than 90 percent of the West Bank and in Gaza with Jerusalem serving as a joint Israeli-Palestinian capital.

That offer was viewed by most Israelis and many supporters of Israel around the world as far too generous. It is an offer that should have been accepted and, in all probability, will never be made again and shouldn't.

Arafat's reason for rejecting Barak's proposal was that it required the Palestinian Authority to accept a provision that ended any expectation or right of Palestinians to return to any part of Israel from which they had fled in 1948.

He said at the time that if he had agreed to that provision, he would have been assassinated. He was probably right to fear that fate.
Story Continues Below

Now, nearly a year and a half after his death, Hamas has defeated Fatah, Arafat's party, by a margin of nearly two to one. Since the Intifada began in 2000, Hamas has been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Israelis at the hands of suicide bombers.

Hamas is committed to the goal of one Palestinian state "from the river [Jordan] to the sea [Mediterranean]" and seeks to eradicate the Jewish state of Israel.

The exiled political head of Hamas, Khaled Meshal, now in Syria, said after the election, according to The New York Times, "Hamas would not ‘submit to pressure to recognize Israel because the occupation is illegitimate and we will not abandon our rights' nor would it disarm, but would work to create a unified Palestinian army" under its direction…and Meshal "defended attacks on Israeli civilians."

The charter of Hamas says of historic Palestine "no one can renounce it or part of it, or abandon it or part of it." That charter calls for "rais[ing] the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine."
The Times' analysis reports "[The charter] calls for the elimination of Israel and Jews from Islamic holy land and portrays the Jews as evil…It describes the struggle against the Jews as a religious obligation for every Muslim."

What are the options for the Israelis?

One would be to join with those who say that Hamas doesn't really mean it. The apologists cite the corruption of Fatah as an excuse for Hamas' win in a democratic election and claim that Hamas will moderate over time, as it adjusts to governing. That's what many Jews and Christians in Germany and elsewhere said of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

In those days, while trying to accommodate Hitler, apologists cited the Versailles treaty and its onerous provisions for reparations as excuses for the electoral success of Hitler who came to power lawfully in a democratic election.

Many Palestinians, like Iranians led by current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other Islamic fanatics, support the statement of Osama bin Laden's second in command, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who said of Jews, Christians, Hindus and others, "I vow by the One who raised the seven layers to Heaven (i.e., Allah) and who has beheaded tyrants, that the leader of America has been thoroughly humiliated.
Our heroes have defended this place. They have entered legend. Killing the infidels is our religion, slaughtering them is our religion, until they convert to Islam or pay us tribute."

Israel and the rest of the world should take these fanatics at their word, just as Mein Kampf foretold Hitler's plan for Europe, the Jews and the world. The Islamic fanatics whose views are often described as fascist - and there are hundreds of millions of them - have launched a war of civilizations: Islam against the West.

This war will continue for a long time to come. In the minds of Islamic fanatics, Israel and the United States are at the top of the list of nations they see as standing in their way to victory.

The Times in its news analysis of Jan. 30, reported that, "At a conference in October titled, ‘The World Without Zionism' …[the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad] effectively called for wiping not just Israel off the map, but America too. ‘Many have tried to disperse disappointment in this struggle between the Islamic world and the infidels,' he said. ‘They say it is not possible to have a world without the United States and Zionism. But you know that this is a possible goal and slogan.''

The Times reported on the same day that in Baghdad, "Bombs exploded Sunday outside four Christian churches and the office of the Vatican envoy, killing three people and wounding at least 15, in a rare and seemingly coordinated set of attacks on Iraq's dwindling Christian community."

The fanatics see most of the nations in Europe and elsewhere ultimately buckling and pleading for peace at any price. Europe will soon be tested when it is asked to continue to give the Hamas Palestinian regime millions of dollars in subsidies, most of which will be used to pay the salaries of those supporting or individually intending to commit terrorist attacks against Israel now, and later throughout in the world.

Will they pay that tribute? I believe they will.
The only realistic option for Israel is not to negotiate with the Palestinians unless and until the Palestinians in Gaza, where they have self rule, form a new government that arrests terrorists, disarms the population and proves that it has accepted the two-state solution.
Its good faith must be evidenced not simply by words and by eliminating murderous covenants from their charter. It must be established by actions, and the passage of time proving the bona fides of those actions and words.

On the first occasion of an attack on Israel by Hamas, Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has promised a response of great magnitude. In my judgment, that is exactly what is required.
If Europe had reacted that way when Hitler marched into the Rhineland in 1936, he would never have marched into Poland in 1939 and begun World War II which exacted death tolls of an estimated more than 60 million people throughout the world.

The Hamas victory has brought us to a moment of truth. The question is, will there be appeasement and a return to the era of Neville Chamberlain, or will the nations of the world stand up to the Islamic terrorists and defeat them, as Winston Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt did with the Nazis and Japanese...

A PIECE OF HISTORY TO BE REMEMBERED, THOSE THAT DO NOT LEARN FROM HISTORY ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT THE PAST.

NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN

Neville Chamberlain, the son of
Joseph Chamberlain, and the brother of Austin Chamberlain, was born in 1869. After being educated at Rugby School he spent seven years managing his father's plantation in the Bahamas. Chamberlain arrived back in England in 1897 where he went into the copper-brass business.

He was active in local politics and in 1915 was elected Lord Mayor of Birmingham. In the 1918 General Election Chamberlain was elected as the Conservative MP for Ladywood. He refused office under David Lloyd George but accepted the posts Postmaster-General (1923-24) and Minister of Health (1924-29) under Stanley Baldwin.

He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the National Government headed by Ramsay MacDonald (1931-37). He was an efficient administrator abolishing the Poor Law and reorganizing unemployment assistance.

In 1936 the

Conservative government feared the spread of communism from the Soviet Union to the rest of Europe. Stanley Baldwin, the British prime minister, shared this concern and was fairly sympathetic to the military uprising in Spain against the left-wing Popular Front government.

Leon Blum, the prime minister of the Popular Front government in France, initially agreed to send aircraft and artillery to help the Republican Army in Spain. However, after coming under pressure from Stanley Baldwin and Anthony Eden in Britain, and more right-wing members of his own cabinet, he changed his mind.

Baldwin and Blum now called for all countries in Europe not to intervene in the
Spanish Civil War. A Non-Intervention Agreement was drawn-up and was eventually signed by 27 countries including the Soviet Union, Germany and Italy. However, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini openly ignored the agreement and sent a large amount of military aid, including troops, to General Francisco Franco and his Nationalist forces.

When Chamberlain replaced

Stanley Baldwin as prime minister he continued the policy of nonintervention. At the end of 1937 he took the controversial decision to send Sir Robert Hodgson to Burgos to be the British government's link with the Nationalist government.

On 13th March 1938
Leon Blum returned to office in France. When he began to argue for an end to the country's nonintervention policy, Chamberlain and the Foreign Office joined with the right-wing press in France and political figures such as Henri-Philippe Petain and Maurice Gamelin to bring him down. On 10th April 1938, Blum was replaced by Edouard Daladier, a politician who agreed not only with Chamberlain's Spanish strategy but his foreign policy that later became known as appeasement.

Chamberlain believed that

Germany had been badly treated by the Allies after it was defeated in the First World War. He therefore thought that the German government had genuine grievances and that these needed to be addressed. He also thought that by agreeing to some of the demands being made by Adolf Hitler of Germany and Benito Mussolini of Italy, he could avoid a European war.

Anthony Eden, Chamberlain's foreign secretary, did not agree with the policy of appeasement and resigned in February, 1938. Eden was replaced by Lord Halifax who fully supported this policy.

In February, 1938,
Adolf Hitler invited Kurt von Schuschnigg, the Austrian Chancellor, to meet him at Berchtesgarden. Hitler demanded concessions for the Austrian Nazi Party. Schuschnigg refused and after resigning was replaced by Arthur Seyss-Inquart, the leader of the Austrian Nazi Party. On 13th March, Seyss-Inquart invited the German Army to occupy Austria and proclaimed union with Germany.

The union of Germany and Austria (

Anschluss) had been specifically forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles. Some members of the House of Commons, including Anthony Eden and Winston Churchill, now called on Chamberlain to take action against Adolf Hitler and his Nazi government.

Hugh Christie an MI6 agent working based in Berlin, met with Hermann Goering on 3rd February 1937. He immediately reported his conversation with Goering and included information that Germany intended to take control of Austria and Czechoslovakia. He also told Christie that Germany mainly wanted "a free hand in Eastern Europe."

In March 1938

Hugh Christie told the British government that Adolf Hitler would be ousted by the military if Britain joined forces with Czechoslovakia against Germany. Christie warned that the "crucial question is 'How soon will the next step against Czechoslovakia be tried?' ... The probability is that the delay will not exceed two or three months at most, unless France and England provide the deterrent, for which cooler heads in Germany are praying."

International tension increased when

Adolf Hitler began demanding that the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia should be under the control of the German government. In an attempt to to solve the crisis, the heads of the governments of Germany, Britain, France and Italy met in Munich in September, 1938.

On 29th September, 1938, Chamberlain,

Adolf Hitler, Edouard Daladier and Benito Mussolini signed the Munich Agreement which transferred to Germany the Sudetenland, a fortified frontier region that contained a large German-speaking population.

When

Eduard Benes, Czechoslovakia's head of state, who had not been invited to Munich, protested at this decision, Neville Chamberlain told him that Britain would be unwilling to go to war over the issue of the Sudetenland.

The

Munich Agreement was popular with most people in Britain because it appeared to have prevented a war with Nazi Germany. However, some politicians, including Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden, attacked the agreement. These critics pointed out that no only had the British government behaved dishonorably, but it had lost the support of Czech Army, one of the best in Europe.

In March, 1939, the

German Army seized the rest of Czechoslovakia. In taking this action Adolf Hitler had broken the Munich Agreement. Chamberlain now realized that Hitler could not be trusted and his appeasement policy now came to an end. After the invasion of Poland, Chamberlain was forced to declare war on Germany. On the outbreak of the Second World War public opinion polls showed that Chamberlain's popularity was 55 per cent. By December, 1939, this had increased to 68 per cent.

However, members of the
House of Commons saw him as an uninspiring war leader. In May 1940 members of the Labour Party and Liberal Party refused to serve in his proposed National Government. Chamberlain resigned and was replaced by Winston Churchill. He was appointed as Lord President of the Council in Churchill's government but ill health forced him to leave office in October 1940, and he died soon afterwards on 9th November, 1940.
