Products - New & Old

WELCOME TO THE NO BS ZONE OF TEDDY JACOBSON

CleenBore USA - Made by Lanigan Performance Products is a cleaning product that was designed to provide a fast efficient barrel cleaning solution for small arms while in the field. Using CO2 cartridges it shoots a bore cleaning saturated plug (cleaning wads) thru the bore for cleaning purposes. These wads come in various calibers. This is a very good idea especially for military units and when you must achieve a clean bore very quickly. I suggest you call Chris Lanigan at (888)-292-0006 or you can email Chris at Lanigan@laniganperformance.com or go to Chris's Website at http://www.laniganperformance.com/ or http://www.cleenboreusa.com/.

Briley Spherical Bushings have been around for a long time and I have used many of them. It is one of the best 1911 Barrel Bushing ideas you can possibly use. You can call Briley at (800)-331-5718 or see the product at http://www.brownells.com/. Be sure to allow for heat expansion of the barrel when specifying the size of the titanium nitride ring that is ordered with each bushing. So you need to select the bushing you want and be sure to measure the outside diameter of your barrel to determine the size of the ring you will need to order.

Greider 1911 Trigger appears to be an exact copy of the Videki Trigger. I have been told it was made by the same tooling that Videki used. This is a very well made trigger but it lacks a take up adjustment, as many triggers do. These triggers can be purchased at www.brownells.com. When I install my take up adjustments I use a specially made riveting system and often silver solder it in place after my final adjustments are made.

1911 Ambi Thumb Safety, I regret that in my opinion there is not a good one made. I always use the Brown Safety but I do that because I find it is the best of the available lot. In order to properly design an Ambi Thumb Safety the shaft going thru the frame should be one piece and should not be joined in the middle, as they are. The right thumb safety side should be much thicker where it interfaces with the detent pin protruding out of the plunger tube. Using an Ambi Thumb Safety like the King design is another problem because if the extended Sear pin breaks you are out of business.

In regards to evaluating 1911 parts, I am going to do this in a future detailed commentary. I want you to understand you cannot pick the best part for your application by brand name, because for example many brand names just buy their parts from sub contractors. When you actually see and note a design flaw in a particular part, which is a casting, you must ask yourself; why dont they correct the flaw?

Here is the answer, years ago I went to a casting company and to have a tree mold made that gives me 6 pieces in every pour, that tree mold was $6000.00 for starters. Todays prices would be much higher. Why would a brand name company knowing they have a design flaw make a new tree mold when they sell all the flawed parts they can make or buy? It always leads to that very big vault on Franklin Ave. No one cares as long as the money keeps rolling in.

Brand "X" may have a very good hammer but Brand "X" may not have a good thumb safety. As long as sales are good for Brand "X" they will sell the same parts regardless. When I see people say that they only buy a specific brand because they are the very best, these people are confused. They are making a blanket statement that just does not apply to reality. Its all BS. Do you think a company like Brand "X" who not only sells parts and does gunsmithing also has a factory set up to make castings, MIM parts, and EDM parts? No way Jose. They buy most of their parts and put it in their own packing.

When you buy a factory 1911 pistol and you look at the slotted MIM hammer you can buy other brand 1911 pistols or buy a hammer alone that has that very same MIM hammer. Where are these MIM hammers made??..I dont know. They could be made here in the US or in Pakistan, India, or Israel. I am trying to open your eyes to the fact that brand names mean nothing. Its the actual part you must evaluate like I do. There are many people that probably do not appreciate me explaining all this to you, but I dont care, honesty comes first.

There are places that sell parts to everyone, yes the same part and by reading by what people say on these forums, these people do not understand that Brand "X" Hammer is identical to Brand "Z" Hammer. The only difference is the color of the label and the company that is selling it. I am sorry to have to burst your bubble.

HAVE A VERY NICE HOLIDAY SEASON

AUTHORS PERSONAL NOTATION: This commentary as well as all my previous commentaries are my personal opinion only and my personal viewpoint only. Buying various parts as I do I have the very same problem all of you do and I realize what I am up against. I stock many parts both after market and factory. At one point in time I had 7 parts in the Brownells catalog. It takes money to make money and if I have to work on every part its a losing proposition. The big boys selling parts just have an employee putting the parts in their destinctive packaging that you are so very familiar with. There is no way I could have made money selling parts as I cared too much about working on each individual part and measured everything. I just decided to give it up as I did not want a partner telling me how to run my show. Thanks to all those sincere decent GUN FOLKS that email me.......................................Teddy
