The Colt I Wanted
WELCOME TO THE NO BS ZONE OF TEDDY JACOBSON
Since I was a young kid back in the early 1950's era I always liked Colt products. I had no money then and I could never imagine being able to afford one. As time went on and as Colt evolved, I can still remember the Colt Royal Blue finish on their products that was second to none. When I think of all the beautiful Colts I had and either sold or traded I break out in a cold sweat.
Colt was dominent in the 1911 pistol market for many years and under proper management and with the cooperation of the "UNIONS" in that part of the country, it is of my opinion that they could have been in total control of the 1911 market. If you have seen an original old Colt Python and can compare it with one made today, you would be the judge. If you could just follow the removable plate line and in the old one you would never see any gaps or irregularities as per my recollection. The old gun masters took such pride in their work as compared to the world we now live in.
Todays values are beyond my comprehenshion, I am still interested in "QUALITY" , NOT VIDEO GAMES...
In the early 1970's you could buy a new Colt Government Model for $150.00 , that was a lot of money for working people to spend. The fit and finish of the old Colts was exceptional. I often ask myself what happened, what went wrong, why is it so hard to even find a new Colt firearm today, this is strictly my opinion only.
Not many give a damn what this ole bird thinks, I remember the old craftsmen that are long gone to the range beyond. They would never even chew up a screw head, or if they saw one that was bad they would replace it, because they cared.
This has become a throw away society. Sure there are a few of us left but we are becoming very scarce and I think about this all the time. Having a superb Colt 1911 with a scratch on the frame from an improperly fitted slide stop would give me a stroke. I know that some of you feel that very same way, but others will say so use a tool to depress the detent pin in the plunger tube. I got news for them, it was designed for the G.I. under battle conditions and for people with 2 hands and no tools required. You DO NOT like my logic, Tough, deal with it, cause its the truth. You do not like what I say then leave. Go back to the BS forums.
Colt should have been able to sew up the market, but they did not and now everyone and his little brother has taken full advantage and cloned their version of John Brownings famous design. I ask myself had Colt been managed differently, would things have been different today ??? I don't know. If Colt was set up in non union areas would that have made a difference ??? I don't know.
What was the reason that Colt did not remain the dominent factor in the 1911 market ??? I wish I knew. I would have tried to help them for free, would they ask ??? Never.
Its not only the company itself that was and is effected, its the consumers like you and me that wanted first rate Colt quality firearms. Why did they drop the Colt Mustang ??? I do not know the real story. Why did Colt design a pistol like the Colt Pony and the Pocket Nine, where in my opinion there was never enough mass of weight on the hammer. Did you ever try taking the captive guide rod out of the Pocket Nine pistol, that is an experience every one deserves at least once.
Can you name one Law enforcement agency that uses Colt Handguns exclusively ??? Colt should have been the dominating leader of quality handguns in America. Maybe its because we lost some of the wonderful craftsmen of yester year. IF COLT HAD THEIR ACT TOGETHER DO YOU THINK THERE WOULD BE 1911 PISTOLS MADE BY KIMBER, DAN WESSON, SIG SAUER, S&W, S.A., P.O., ETC, ETC. I personally do not think so, my only question at this point in time is who is next to clone the 1911. Are the marketing geniuses going to add a frame rail to accomodate a digital camera, etc, etc. ??? (I had to add this because it is Mr. Franklin that tells them what to do) I know they would love a meter on each handgun to tell you how many shots a particular gun has fired.
