Taurus PT 92, 99
WELCOME TO THE NO BS ZONE.
I have worked on many of these PT 92 and PT 99 pistols made by Taurus in Brazil. The PT 92 is a fixed sight version (3 dot design) and the PT 99 is the adjustable sight version. This is a large frame high capacity 9mm semi auto pistol that has a capacity of 15 rounds in the magazine and with one bullet in the chamber giving you 16 rounds of fire power. It weighs 34 ounces unloaded.
Many people think that this is an exact copy of the Beretta 92F, they are wrong. Its of a very similar design but it is NOT an exact replica. It has an open slide design the same as the Beretta, but the main obvious difference is that the thumb safety is on the anodized aluminum frame, where the Beretta 92F has a slide mounted thumb safety.
I have studied every part in the Taurus PT series as compared to the Beretta 92F and the internal parts in the Taurus are in my opinion are not made near as well as the Beretta. The large capacity handgun of my choice to protect my property has always been the 92F made by Beretta. Many people think that when they purchase the Taurus PT series they are getting the same gun as a Beretta 92F at a very reduced price, they are "VERY" wrong.
Many of my customers are very pleased with their PT 92 and when they work well they are flawless in operation. As always you must keep it clean and lightly lubed because of the open slide design, when kept clean and on the dry side, I found it works best. I lube all my open slide Berettas with a small amount of Militec gun oil and I never have a problem. This type of open slide semi auto is super reliable with proper maintenance and you must use good ammunition.
I suggest taking the external extractor out once in a while and cleaning it with LPS MICRO X and you should always clean your handgun after it has been used.
I suggest using factory magazines and do not lube your mags, keep them dry as well as the breech face and the extractor. I have not had any major problems with the Taurus PT series, it is a very economical handgun. The barrel locks up in the rear, the same as the Beretta 92 F. I do not use many thumb safeties because I am left handed, the reason is that I may need to use so many different handguns at any given time, and I do not even want to think about it in a critical moment. Of course safety comes first, I am fully aware of it but my two DAWGS will not be using any of them.
Would I buy a Taurus PT series handgun ??? NO , because I want better internal quality as in the Beretta series of 92 pistols. For a person on a limited budget that is looking for a similar pistol as the Beretta 92F that will work well the Taurus may be just what they are looking for. The old story is usually true, you usually get what you pay for.
I have been able to improve the double action and the single action of the Taurus PT series, but it is more difficuly for me than working on the Beretta. The Taurus has a firing block safety system. It is in my opinion safe to carry with a bullet in the chamber providing you are trained in the safe performance of this pistol and you carry it in a good holster. Safety must come first. The thumb safety is of the ambi type for south paws like me. It is a good choice for the price, but when I purchase a gun for myself I know what all the internals of most models out there look like under magnification and my selection is based on internal quality of parts as well as my needs.
The Taurus is a wide grip, as it has a double stack magazine and it is not for a small hand. If you are looking for pure fire power and have a limited budget this PT series will work fine.
