Preparing For Hard Times
WELCOME TO THE NO BS ZONE OF TEDDY JACOBSON
I own many BIBLES of all kinds and read them daily and I treasure them, but in this real world of chaos and uncertainty, its time to talk about survival. I get emails daily from men and women asking me what they should buy. LETS START FROM THE BEGINNING.
You must stockpile food and water, including dawg and cat food for your pets. Many people buy MRE's (meals ready to eat) which is an excellent idea, I buy ENSURE or BOOST by the case at Sams Club. You must have extra eye glasses. Many people are buying anti Radiation tablets, look into this, its a good idea, they are not expensive, www.ki4u.com/
. Make sure you have extra medication you require, I suggest a 3 month supply. Always remember that food store shelves will be empty in 2 or 3 days if the trucks are not rolling in to resupply these stores like Kroger or Publix, etc, etc.
You must have a handgun chambered for a caliber that will be available in hard times. Lets assume the very worst happens and if the FEDS take steps in order to protect us they will most likely shut down the sale of guns and ammo overnite. I can only ask G-D to help guide President Bush in his decisions. You will need to rely on a handgun caliber that you can easily get or barter for food or medicine or whatever. A 9mm or 45 acp caliber cartridge would be your best bet. I am not saying a 357 Sig caliber or a Glock 45 gap caliber is not any good, but you will never find these calibers in hard times. Do not BS yourself.
You should all have a 22 caliber handgun and or a rifle that uses 22 long rifle. It never hurts to have a 177 or 22 caliber pellet rifle that uses a hand pump action.
As for your handgun, if you have found a particular one that is your very favorite, if it is a semi auto you should have about 5 magazines for it, along with extra springs. You will need Recoil Springs and Firing Pin Springs and an extra Firing Pin and do not forget to buy an extra Extractor and an Extractor Spring. I firmly believe in having a second or third pistol that is identical, just in case you must canabalize your extra handgun to keep your carry pistol operational.
For example, lets say your favorite handgun is a Sig Sauer 226, you should have extra springs of all kinds, be sure to include extra RESET SPRINGS which are available from the factory only. If this little spring were to break, you are the proud owner of a 226 paper weight. At this time Sig is the only Gun Company that uses this reset spring design. So regardless of your favorite pistol or revolver, get a second or third if you can afford it. You must have spare ammo and you must seal your primers which I covered in detail in a past commentary.
HOW MUCH AMMO ??? I do not know as I am asked this question all the time. Having 500 rounds per caliber is not a great deal of ammo, but its a start.
We are dealing with unknown factors. If you reload you must have PRIMERS and BRASS and POWDER and BULLETS. Those that reload know that a 9mm uses a small pistol primer and a 45 acp uses a large pistol primer., so pay attention as your very survival depends on preparation. Having bullets and brass and powder does you no good without the primers.
I have my HK P7 M8 which is my favorite, I have extra springs for it, I have thought about this for years and never thought I would be compelled to write an article on how very important this entire subject is. If you have a rifle be sure you understand those calibers use a rifle primer, so if you reload you must have small and large rifle primers. Be careful when using MAGNUM PRIMERS. Do not wait for the last minute to take inventory.
If your scope uses batteries for an illuminated recticle or an illuminated dot buy extra batteries now. Get a Surefire or Mag-lite or a Streamlight and get extra batteries and extra bulbs. Do not forget your AM and Fm radio and it would help if you have a number of 2 way radios for family members that have a distance of no less than 2 miles. They are available everywhere. Prepare for hard times while you can.
You will need at least one or two TACTICAL KNIVES, in my State of Texas, I am allowed to carry a folder with a maximum blade length of 5.25 inches. You must check your specific state laws and see what blade length is legal in your area. Always stay within the legal limits of where you reside. Some of the best Tactical Folders are as follows; CRKT (Columbia River Knife and Tool), Cold Steel, Benchmade,, Spyderco, Camillus, Microtech, MOD, etc. You must be practical, if you can open it with one hand so much the better. I like blades that are 1/2 serrated, its just personal choice, you will need a Diamond stone with fine grit (600) in order to resharpen the non serrated portion very quickly.
I will do a commentary on this subject soon, it will be hard to explain because of lack of photos. I have sharpened countless knives since I was a kid in Brooklyn. You can even get a neck knife made by any of the very brands I mentioned, its a good idea and not expensive. If you can not find what you want you can email me and I will put you in touch with someone that can help you with knives.
Another priority is a first aid kit, do not take this lightly as we are in for a rough ride in our future, get serious now before its too late. As we enter 2005 I believe very hard times are coming but I want to wish all of you a healthy New Year.
We must all ask our creator to help this government make decisions that are correct and lets say a prayer for the dead people in that earthquake in the far east, but most of all a prayer for our troops. G-D Bless.
AUTHORS PERSONAL NOTATION:
This commentary as well as all my previous commentaries are my personal opinion only and my personal viewpoint only.
