Pick your Poison
WELCOME TO THE NO BS ZONE OF TEDDY JACOBSON
I have constant requests as to which product is best. This is a never ending evaluation, goes back to when I was a kid I remember people in bitter arguments of which was better FORD or CHEVY. Choosing sides in the war of cars was a big deal back then, you were on one side or the other. Was the Ford v8 - 289 better than the Chevy - 283 v8 engine. Its never been that simple to answer, being able to look back at history.
In current times I can apply the same theory to the Martial Arts, there were bitter arguments as to which style was better. Was it the Korean style or the Japanese style or the Okinawian or the Chinese style. Well the answer has always been whether they like it or not, the make up of a persons own size and power. For the frail Chinese it is better to have speed. For the taller person with long legs it was always better to have learned the Korean style because it was mostly leg work. For the powerful people that were strong it was always a slower more powerful structured system that the Japanese used. The Okinawa systems combined a lot of both systems.
The point of this commentary is that every person must pick the handgun for their own physical make up and strength. Are they going to buy a gun and put it in a drawer near their bed to give them mental comfort, but never learn to use it properly. Are they going to get serious and carry the handgun on a daily basis. My questions never end because in order to point the person in the right direction these questions must be answered.
When I was younger and stronger and weighed more it was nothing to carry a 1911 government model pistol, but at this point in time, I have no desire to carry 3 pounds of iron, when I can carry a polymer pistol that carries 9 or 10 rounds of hell, and when fully loaded still only weights about 27 ounces (estimated).
When I say pick your poison I will explain what I mean. Calls come in all the time about which is better Colt vs Springfield Armory (SA) 1911 pistols. There is no easy answer because Colt gives you better parts and springs and SA gives you a much better frame to slide fit and their parts and springs are not as good as Colt. Which is more important to you, only you can decide, SA is half the price and that will buy a lot of GOOD PARTS AND GOOD SPRINGS.
If a Woman is a Police Officer and is 5 foot tall or whatever and she weighs 120 lbs, its not that easy for her to rack the slide of a pistol that has an 18 lb recoil spring. Have you any idea how hard it is to run carrying a 3 lb. pistol with extra magazines and handcuffs and a radio on your belt. You could not outrun a FLEA.
I have been there and done that so I really know, add an ankle holster to one of your legs and faghetaboutit. That is reality.
When choosing a handgun for your self or some one close you must write all these things down to evaluate the intent of the user. You must think about your hearing when firing anything in an enclosed area. Do NOT even consider a ported gun, thats just designed to get your money. These are my opinions only and I do not care who likes what I say, I am telling you the truth. A person who buys a handgun and never fires it has nothing because when the chips are down they have no idea what they will do or what to expect. You must get out to the range and practice, even if you use a 22 pistol, its always BULLET PLACEMENT. LOOK IN A MEDICAL BOOK AND MEMORIZE WHERE THE VITAL ORGANS ARE FROM EVERY ANGLE. THIS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE. The rest is all BS.
When choosing a handgun you must first go to a local gun store and put the various models in your hand. You must do this to see that all people can not deal with the same weapon comfortably. I personally have adapted the outlook of being able to use anything, because in the past I have worked on most everything at one time or another. I know what to expect, I know how they work, I know how they feel, I know what to do. Your physical size and make up are critical in your decision of what to buy. Your intended use is critical.
Just recentely a person was killed because he attacked the owner of someone carrying my work. This is what it is all about. The only happy ending is that you get to go home at nite and the other person goes to the medical examiner with a nice tag on his toe. Forget the BS in advertisements, its all hype, forget the glamerous photos in these wonderful articles, think practical, think reality, think about your physical size and what size handgun you can handle. That is the real world.
Select a handgun that suits your needs and fits your hand and a caliber that you can handle, forget that MACHO BS. Leave that to the "EXPOITS" that believe their own BS. In a parrellel that may help you understand. If you are 7 foot tall are you going to buy a VW bug to drive around in. If you have a hand the size of a ham you can not use a Walther PPK or PPK/S it will rip up the web of your hand.
I worked in past years with a man who unfortunately is long gone, he was my friend. He loved a Browning Hi Power but it was to heavy for him to carry. He carried it every where in a paper bag so no one would even give it a second glance.
I hope you understand I am not trying to tell you what to buy and what to use, that is your decision, just use common sense and forget the BS. If you have any questions please email me or call me most any day after 10 am central time.
Have a good day....
AUTHORS PERSONAL NOTATION:
This commentary as well as all my previous commentaries are my personal opinion and my personal viewpoint only. FOR THOSE THAT SAW THE ADMIRALS CHEYTAC COMMANDER AT THE SHOT SHOW, REMEMBER THIS PISTOL WAS RUINED BY ANOTHER SMITH AND BETWEEN CLAUDIO AND MYSELF WE SAVED THE GUN. IT EVEN CAME TO ME WITH A 38 SUPER EXTRACTOR INSTALLED WHEN IT WAS IN FACT CHAMBERED FOR A 45 ACP CARTRIDGE.
